Kylwyria, a trio dedicated to commissioning new works for horn, violin, and piano, presents new works written for one of the most traditional (“thanks, Brahms…”) yet delightfully complex (“yay, Ligeti!) chamber music instrumentations. Eric Wubbels’ Chimeric Form (2023) radically expands what idiomatic writing can mean for these three instruments, blending and bending their sonorities into brilliant microtonal tapestries and strange, timbral chimeras. Katherine Young’s Mycorrhiza VI (2025) is a spatialized sonic encounter with a dynamic, mycorrhizal forest ecosystem, featuring the composer performing live electronics. Both works represent the new shapes the horn trio is taking in the twenty-first century.
