HAIDEN HENDERSON
Haiden Henderson grew up in the afterglow of an era when sex still seemed like it was supposed to be fun.
Before desire became so tangled up in conversations about power, control, identity, fear and who is allowed to want what, there was something more carefree about it: attraction, curiosity, fantasy, bad decisions, great stories and the electric thrill of wanting someone and being wanted back.
Haiden’s debut album, bleach (Lava/Republic Records), wants some of that back.
At its heart is a return to the raw, playful promiscuousness that once coursed through pop and rock & roll—the sweat, humor, danger and abandon of desire and self-discovery. But Haiden isn’t interested in simply resurrecting the swaggering male sex symbol of another generation. He wants to reimagine him.
Prince could be masculine and feminine, dominant and submissive. Iggy Pop turned his body into part of the performance. And when Justin Timberlake declared he was bringing “SexyBack,” sex itself felt playful, cheeky and uncomplicated enough to become a pop hook.
Haiden takes that lineage and asks a more contemporary question on bleach. Can the confidence to strip away your old ideas of self and relinquish control be its own expression of power?
For a six-foot-six singer, songwriter, guitarist and producer who looks every inch the archetypal rock star, that contradiction is precisely the point. bleach lives inside those contradictions: masculine and feminine, dominance and submission, vulnerability and swagger, control and complete abandon. As the album unfolds, that surrender extends far beyond sex. It becomes personal.
The entire record began to crystallize around a single lyric:
“Maybe the bleach has gone to my head. Stripping me clean, the old me is dead.”
“It unlocked the entire album for me,” Haiden says. “I realized bleaching my hair was probably the most performative thing I’d ever done. I wanted people to notice me, to want me. bleach became this metaphor for everything I was willing to strip away about myself in pursuit of being wanted.”
For as long as he can remember, Haiden had been good at performing—not simply onstage, but in life. Reading a room. Shapeshifting. Eventually, the pursuit of being wanted began to obscure the person underneath.
That gives bleach its deeper tension. Beneath all the sex, guitars and provocation is a transformation fantasy about desire and self-destruction, reinvention and ruin. It asks what happens when wanting to be desired becomes a need to be approved of—and what it takes to finally surrender that need.
With an electric guitar slung over his shoulder and a towering falsetto that can move from intimate to explosive, the California-based artist occupies a space somewhere between rock star, pop provocateur and R&B showman. Distorted guitars collide with hip-hop drums and glossy pop instincts, creating songs that feel equally suited to the dancefloor and the bedroom. Intimacy fights with spectacle.
“There’s intensity, drama and excitement to the sound,” Haiden says. “I’m contextualizing rock music a little differently because I grew up listening to R&B and hip-hop. I asked myself, ‘What would Prince be doing if he was alive today? How would the real revolutionaries keep things interesting?’ The music is guitar-driven, but I wanted to use the instrument in ways people might not even realize it’s a guitar. Everything is intentionally raw.”
That rawness became a mandate to the creative team, throughout 2026, Haiden built bleach alongside co-producer Benny Cassette, whose credits include SZA, John Legend, Miguel, and more, with one guiding principle: stop chasing perfection.
“Benny said my last project sounded perfect and asked if I’d ever considered making music that doesn’t sound perfect,” Haiden recalls. “That completely changed my perspective.”
So, they stopped sanding away the edges. Distortion stayed distorted. Mistakes were allowed to live. Guitars were manipulated until they sometimes stopped sounding like guitars at all. The production began to embody the same freedom Haiden was exploring in the songs—the possibility that something becomes more exciting, more human and even sexier when it is left a little unresolved.
That spirit runs throughout bleach.
“freak for you” introduces the album through the intoxicating space between obsession and desire. “how you like it” leans into playful sexual tension, while “i wanna be your girl” pushes the album’s ideas about sexuality and masculine power somewhere more provocative. Co-writer and singer, Zaria Simone’s voice drifts through the record like an elusive presence, further blurring the lines between fantasy and reality.
On “domino,” Haiden explores the invisible ties that can survive distance and time. “i hate this song” erupts into one of the album’s most cathartic moments, choosing loud imperfection over polished restraint.
By the time bleach was finished, its title had come to mean much more than a change in hair color. Bleach can transform something, but it can also strip it, expose it and damage it. For Haiden, it became a metaphor for the cost of altering yourself in pursuit of being wanted—and the freedom that comes when you finally stop.
For an artist whose career already includes sold-out headline tours across North America, the UK and Europe, tens of millions of streams and a fiercely devoted ‘Haider Nation’ fanbase, bleach is less a reinvention than a revelation. Projects including Good Grief! Choke on My Heart, lover boy and tension established Haiden as one of alternative pop’s most exciting young artists.
“Whether you hate the music or love it, I’m happy as long as it makes you feel something,” he says. “That’s how you start a conversation.” And bleach should start plenty.
Because Haiden Henderson isn’t interested in telling a generation how to have sex, how to be masculine or even how to be themselves. He’s interested in something much more liberating: questioning all the rules we’ve accumulated around those things in the first place.
Maybe masculinity doesn’t require dominance. Maybe surrender can be powerful. Maybe imperfection is sexier than perfection. Maybe being wanted matters less once you stop needing everyone’s approval.
And maybe, somewhere along the way, we forgot something wonderfully simple:
Youth, sex and self-discovery are supposed to be fun.
